As part of the LALS 50th anniversary celebrations, we are pleased to invite you to the event "Between Mobility and Control: Contemporary Black Diasporas across the Americas." This public panel brings together scholars who examine the complex and often perilous journeys of migrants from the Caribbean—particularly Haiti—and African countries, navigating through and beyond South America toward northern destinations, especially the U.S. These transnational mobilities are not new; they are deeply rooted in historical processes that have shaped and continue to transform the Americas. By exposing the violence of anti-Black border regimes and the resilience of those who defy them, this discussion aims to challenge dominant migration narratives and reveal the enduring legacies of racialized exclusion that define our present.

Panelists:
*   Dr. Amanda Pinheiro, Georgetown University
*   Dr. Thauany Freire, Universidade de São Paulo
*   Dr. Bruno Miranda, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México
*   Dr. Manoushka Celeste, UIC

Discussant: Dr. Lynette Jackson, UIC
Moderator: Dr. Soledad Álvarez Velasco, UIC

This event is co-sponsored by the Departments of Anthropology and Black Studies, and the Diaspora Studies Cluster and is generously funded by a Mellon Foundation Affirming Multivocal Humanities Grant.
