Dr. Friberg Publishes Two Articles in Midcontinental Journal of Archaeology
Introduction
Field Museum Assistant Curator of North American Anthropology and UIC Anthropology Lecturer Dr. Christina Friberg has contributed two papers to the special issue of the Midcontinental Journal of Archaeology, Repatriating Angel Mounds. The volume covers the NAGPRA repatriation of ancestors at Angel Mounds State Historic Site in 2021, bringing together Indigenous, archaeological, and institutional perspectives on the 7-year project to return 725 ancestors to the earth. The issue is meant to be for both an academic and non-academic audience to share these experiences and the work that made a repatriation of this magnitude possible. I am humbled to have been a part of the project.
Dr. Friberg's first paper, Living at Angel Mounds, is an article providing a historical context of Angel Mounds; the goal of the article is to introduce readers not to the site or the archaeology that took place there, but to the people who built, lived on, and were buried there, to honor them and their story. The second article discusses the archaeological fieldwork that was conducted to locate and prepare an area on the site for reburial.
