I am a chemist specializing in the characterization of ancient materials, including glass, metals, stones, ceramics and pigments. Currently, I serve as a Senior Research Scientist at the Field Museum where I also direct the Elemental Analysis Facility. I develop applications for laser ablation – inductively coupled plasma – mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) and portable X-Ray Fluorescence to study cultural items and I train students on these techniques to enable them to conduct their own research. My work focused on ancient glass and the circulation of glass beads around the Indian Ocean using elemental and isotopic (Sr, Nd and Pb) compositions.
