Ambassador Kmiec Speaks on "Fictional War on Religion"

May 11, 2012

Former Ambassador Douglas A. Kmiec urged greater generosity and increased civility in our public discourse when he spoke to a gathering of about 75 people on Wednesday, March 14, as one of the speakers in this year's Catholic Studies Lecture Series.

Ambassador Kmiec was a well-known law professor and defender of Catholic social doctrine before he was shot into the spotlight in 2008 for urging Catholics to see abortion as just one issue among many in the then upcoming presidential election.  He went on to stump for Barack Obama and attempted to reshape discourse among American Catholics that all-too-often stopped at the mention of the subject of abortion.  In 2009, President Obama appointed Kmiec Ambassador to Malta, a position he held until 2011.

Kmiec's talk was the second of three in this year's Catholic Studies Lecture Series.  Francis Cardinal George spoke on the legacy of Vatican II in October and the philosopher Alasdair MacIntyre will come on April 10.
