Download iCal Fileou are invited to our next Weekday Afternoon Anthropology Talks (WAATs) MONDAY March 31st at 12pm-1pm with Dr. Christina Friberg from the Department of Anthropology and The Field Museum:
Title: Indigenous Resilience in Uncertain Times: Climate Change, Warfare, and Late Mississippian Community Integration
Where: Behavioral Sciences Building (BSB) Room 2105
When: March 31st at 12pm-1pm
About: Rather than collapsing, Mississippian peoples created strategies for coping with warfare, including shifting subsistence strategies, building protective palisade walls, and reorganizing communities in increasingly constricted spaces. Dr. Friberg investigates these patterns at the Angel Mounds State Historic Site, a fortified Mississippian (1150–1450) multi-mound center located in Evansville, Indiana. A spatial analysis of legacy excavation data from Angel Mounds reveals patterns of changing community organization over time to show more than 200 years (or 8 generations) of Indigenous resilience in the face of uncertainty through protective measures, community reintegration, and strategic land management.
