Dr. Reddy and Dr. Guevarra Awarded Dr. Scholl’s Foundation Scholarship

Dr. Gayatri Reddy and Dr. Anna Guevarra received a Dr. Scholl’s Foundation Scholarship for Advancing Global Human Rights and Environmental Justice. In partnership with the Law School and School of Public Health, they were awarded $50,000. Dr. Reddy and Dr. Guevarra will use the funds to do research and fieldwork travel to India to pursue the exploration of climate change and food justice. The grant will allow them to award a couple of scholarships to 2-3 undergraduate students who are interested in joining them in this exciting and amazing opportunity.

Dr. Reddy is an associate professor in Anthropology, and Gender & Women's Studies and an affiliate faculty in Global Asian Studies. She is a sociocultural anthropologist and her research and teaching interests lie at the intersections of sexuality, gender, health, and the politics of subject and community-formation in India, as well as within the immigrant South Asian queer community in the U.S. Broadly, her work interrogates the contours of cultural belonging through the paradoxical dialectic of “alienation and intimacy.”

Professor Anna Guevarra has served as the Global Asian Studies program's director since 2012, beginning when it was Asian American Studies. She then became the Founding Director of the Global Asian Studies Program in 2016. She is a Co-PI of the UIC AANAPISI Initiative and the Social Justice and Human Rights Cluster and a member of the Diaspora Cluster at UIC. Her interdisciplinary scholarship, teaching, and community-engaged work focus on immigrant and transnational labor, the geopolitics of carework, the Philippine diaspora, and critical race/ethnic studies.
