About
I am a North American archaeologist and specialist in precolonial Native American societies in the Midwest and Southeast and I am interested in the broader impacts of complex non-state societies on outlying communities. My research focuses particularly on the ways in which large Mississippian-period (1050-1450 CE) sites like Cahokia influenced smaller, local communities, and the impacts of endemic warfare on daily life for people living in the Illinois River Valley and Lower Ohio River Valley. I investigate the Mississippian phenomenon and issues of identity, community organization, sociopolitical complexity, and religion by incorporating a combination of geophysical survey, excavation, geospatial analysis, and material analyses.
